Hempstead recycling information
Glass
• Juice, soda, water, beer and wine bottles, and food jars should be rinsed before recycling. Labels do not need to be removed. Caps and lids should be discarded with regular trash.
DO NOT RECYCLE: Light bulbs, window and auto glass, mirrors, dishes and drinking glasses, broken glass, pottery and clay pots.
Metal
Items should be rinsed before recycling.
• Cans
• Aluminum foil
• Baking tins
• License plates (Defaced with indelible marker. Limit one per week)
DO NOT RECYCLE: Cans used for chemicals or paint, aerosol spray cans, appliances, tools or batteries.
Plastics
Check recycling logo at the bottom of the item (a number in a triangle of arrows). Items marked with a "1" or "2" can be recycled. All should be rinsed and flattened before discarding. Caps and lids should be put out with regular trash.
DO NOT RECYCLE: Plastics without "1" or "2" recycling logo, plastic grocery bags, frozen food or meat trays, motor oil containers, styrofoam, plastic flower pots, six pack holders and rings, containers used for paint and solvents, lawn care products and chemicals.
Paper
• Newspapers and inserts (tied with string or placed in a paper bag)
• Magazines, catalogs, office and school paper, computer paper, discarded mail, paper grocery and lunch bags, corrugated cardboard (flattened and tied in bundles of approximately 2 ft. x 2 ft. x 6 in. and placed next to recycling bin.)
DO NOT RECYCLE: Food boxes (cereal, pasta, etc.), index cards, telephone books, metallic paper, hardcover and paperback books, paper plates & cups, paper towels, egg cartons, non-paper envelopes, cardboard with wax or styrofoam, pizza boxes.
The preceeding guidelines apply to unincorporated villages in the Town of Hempstead, and do not pertain to special sanitary districts. Residents in those jurisdictions should contact their local communities for guidelines.
