Newsday, charities distribute more than $1 million to not-for-profits on Long Island and in New York
Feb. 21, 2005, Long Island, NY Charitable groups that serve communities on Long Island and in New York received a total of more than $1 million from Newsday and Newsday Charities, a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, at an annual grants reception held at the paper's headquarters in Melville.
The majority of the funds were raised through Newsday Charities' annual in-paper fund-raisers, Help-A-Family and Kids Campaign, both of which provide assistance to needy families and children across the region. Newsday Charities is a fund of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. Funds raised for Newsday Charities are matched 50 cents on the dollar by the Foundation and 100% of the funds raised plus the match are given back to the community
In addition, more than $200,000 was granted by the Times Mirror Foundation through Newsday. And Newsday presented United Way of Long Island with $111,655, representing the company's match of the funds raised last year by its employee United Way campaign, which includes employee payroll deductions.
"When companies support charitable endeavors, it is often called being a good corporate citizen," said Newsday Publisher, President and CEO Timothy P. Knight. "I like to think of it as investing in the communities we serve and where we live. Strong, healthy communities where we take care of all of our citizens are good for families and schools and businesses." The breadth of this investment is due also to Newsday's partnership with the McCormick Tribune Foundation through Newsday Charities. .
Under Knight's leadership, in 2005 the mission of Newsday's community affairs efforts hopes to focus on strengthening the future of its region by addressing the needs of young people in the communities it serves. "Our young people represent the promise of future and it's our obligation to invest our resources to make a meaningful impact in their lives."
