In 2004, with Varitek handling both top-tier pitchers Pedro Martinez and Curt Schilling to perhaps their best seasons, the Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years. He hit a career best .296 in 137 games. Varitek was acquired by the Red Sox on July 31, 1997 with pitcher Derek Lowe from the Seattle Mariners for reliever Heathcliff Slocumb. Varitek grew up in Longwood, Fla., where he played shortstop on the Atlamonte Springs (Fla.) team that lost in the finals of the 1984 Little League World Series. He attended Lake Brantley High School in Altamonte Springs and then played for Georgia Tech.
