The feisty manager of the Chicago Cubs came to Chicago in 2007 with the goal of changing the culture of losing that has defined the organization for several decades. A former major-league outfielder who made his reputation with the "Bronx Zoo" edition of the New York Yankees in the 1970s, Piniella will begin the 2008 season with 1,604 wins as manager, ranking 15th on the all-time list. Piniella had a memorable debut season in Chicago, guiding the Cubs to a Central Division championship before they bowed out in three straight games to Arizona in the postseason. After a poor start, the turnaround of the '07 Cubs was traced to a sunny afternoon at Wrigley Field in early June when Piniella was ejected (and eventually suspended) for kicking dirt on an umpire. Piniella has two "Manager of the Year" awards to his credit, and he won a world championship in his first year with Cincinnati in 1990. Known by his nickname "Sweet Lou," Piniella has recently tried to downplay his age-old image as a short-tempered lunatic who fights with umpires and throws bases when a call goes against him. Piniella is signed through the 2009 season, and insists that the Cubs job will be his last before retiring.
