During the 2005 playoffs, Konerko was named the MVP of the American League Championship Series against the Angels, hitting .268 with two homers and seven RBIs. In the second game of the World Series, Konerko hit a dramatic grand slam to put the White Sox ahead 6-4 in a game they'd go on to win 7-6 on Scott Podsednik's walkoff home run. Following the World Series, Konerko became a free agent and was ardently pursued by the Angels until Reinsdorf signed him to a five-year contract worth $60 million. Konerko was drafted by the Dodgers as a catcher out of Scottsdale, Ariz. The White Sox acquired him from the Cincinnati Reds in 1999 for outfielder Mike Cameron. He had been a third baseman but was moved to first base and quickly became a fixture at U. S. Cellular Field, helping the White Sox make the playoffs in 2000.
