Highlights

A native of Durham, N.C., and a multi-talented athlete, David Garrard (pronounced guh-RARD) is one of only eight starting quarterbacks in the history of the NFL¿s Jacksonville Jaguars.
Garrard was drafted by the Jags in the fourth round of the 2002 draft. He was a reserve quarterback under Mark Brunell, then a backup to Byron Leftwich through the 2006 season. In 2005 he was elevated to starter when Leftwich injured an ankle. He guided the team to a 4-1 finish and to an AFC Wild-Card playoff berth. A year later Leftwich injured his ankle again, this time with 10 games to play. Garrard had the team poised for another playoff appearance, but an 0-3 finish left the Jags 8-8 and home for...

Garrard had the team poised for another playoff appearance, but an 0-3 finish left the Jags 8-8 and home for postseason. Despite the collapse, Garrard thrived in the 2007 offseason under new quarterbacks coach Mike Shula and new offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter.
Jacksonville Coach Jack Del Rio stunned the NFL ¿ and his own team ¿ when he released Leftwich after training camp and made Garrard his new starter. Although he was recruited by some schools as a linebacker because of his size (6 feet 1, 248 pounds), Garrard played quarterback at East Carolina University and rewrote the Pirates¿ record book. He passed for 60 touchdowns and ran for 21 more.
Although it took Garrard until his sixth season to become a starting quarterback, his time in Jacksonville is also noteworthy for a personal accomplishment: conquering Crohn¿s disease. He was struck by it in 2004 and thought his career might be over. But surgery and medication gave him back his career. Garrard and his wife Mary have one child.
