Lovie Smith, from the small Texas town of Big Sandy, was hired by general manger Jerry Angelo to succeed Dick Jauron as Bears head coach in 2004. Smith got his first team off to a respectable 3-5 start but saw the year unravel amid a blizzard of problems at quarterback and finished 2-6 over the second half of the season. When Rex Grossman was injured in the 2005 preseason, Smith went to rookie Kyle Orton and reached the playoffs with a surprise 11-5 record. A former linebacker and safety at Tulsa in the late 1970's, Smith broke into coaching tutoring linebackers at his alma mater and developed into one of the game's most respected defensive coaches, reaching the pro ranks in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming defensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the St. Louis Rams, and taking over as the Bears' top man, where he continued to focus on building elite defenses built around speed and a simplified, attacking philosophy. Smith signed a long-term contract extension after the Super Bowl.
