A former linebacker and safety at Tulsa in the late 1970's, Smith broke into coaching tutoring linebackers at his alma mater and developed into one of the game's most respected defensive coaches, reaching the pro ranks in 1996 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, becoming defensive coordinator and assistant head coach of the St. Louis Rams, and taking over as the Bears' top man, where he continued to focus on building elite defenses built around speed and a simplified, attacking philosophy. Smith signed a long-term contract extension after the Super Bowl.
