  1. Isles sign Weight as help for Guerin

    As much as it might help the Islanders' young kids to have an experienced hand like 37-year-old center Doug Weight to show them the way, his signing yesterday might mean a whole lot more to another aging veteran - captain Bill Guerin. The chemistry between those two when they played together previously with Edmonton and St. Louis was the major reason general manager Garth Snow targeted Weight in the free-agent market.

    Of all the deficiencies on an Islanders team that finished with the NHL's fifth-worst record last season, none was more glaring than the absence of a true power-play quarterback. But general manager Garth Snow crossed that problem off his list last night by signing former Montreal defenseman Mark Streit to a five-year contract worth $20.5 million.

    Hopes were high in Islanders country one year ago that forward Ryan Smyth would come around at the last minute, forsake his Western Conference roots and sign a long-term deal to serve as Captain Long Island. When Smyth, Jason Blake, Viktor Kozlov and defenseman Tom Poti left as free agents July 1, taking the offense with them, it was a dark day for Islanders fans.

    OTTAWA - Sitting in the No. 5 spot of what was regarded as one of the most top-heavy drafts in NHL history, Islanders general manager Garth Snow stunned the hockey world Friday night by trading down not once, but twice to take Windsor Spitfires center Josh Bailey with the ninth pick of the draft. In the process, Snow added two more picks this year and one next year, but at the cost of passing up Nikita Filatov, one of the prospects widely regarded as a cornerstone player.
