Highlights

The first Chicago Marathon, then called the Mayor Daley Marathon, was held on Sept. 25, 1977, and attracted about 4,200 runners. Over the decades, participation in the 26.2-mile race has grown to about 40,000. The race has had various sponsors over the years, including LaSalle Bank, which took over operation in 1993. On Oct. 9, 2007, for the first time in its 30-year history, the marathon shut down early as more than 300 participants were taken to hospitals because of the unusually high heat and humidity. Runners reported water shortages. One runner died at least in part because of a heart condition.
