The midway point of the NASCAR season, the Pepsi 400 is held on the first Saturday in July at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. The race started in 1959 as the Firecracker 250 and in 1963 was expanded to 400 miles.
The race was always held on the morning of July 4th because of heat and the threat of afternoon thunderstorms. It was moved to Saturdays in 1988 and 1998 it was moved to a night race to accommodate television. The first year it moved to nights, the race was postponed until October because of wildfires in the Central Florida area.

The race is 160 laps and is the only NASCAR night race run with restrictor plates, a devise used to control the speed of the cars. The legendary Fireball Roberts won the first race but many remember the 1984 race when Richard Petty won his 200th race, the last time he would get the checkered flag. Coincidentally, 1984 was the year that President Ronald Reagan gave the start command aboard Air Force One followed by his arrival at the track where he became the first sitting president to attend a NASCAR race.
Never one to let sentimentality get in the way of sponsorship dollars, NASCAR dropped Pepsi as a sponsor after the 2007 race and starting in 2008 the race will be sponsored by Coca-Cola.
