Highlights
Atlantic Beach, in some respects, was created out of nothing a relatively short time ago. The village occupies the western end of the barrier island dominated by Long Beach. But until about 100 years ago, the island existed first as a sandbar, which then grew into an extension of the barrier island. Freeport developer Stephen Petit dredgws tons of sand from the bottom of Reynolds Channel onto the sandbar during the 1920s to create Atlantic Beach. Petit's aim was to build a quiet ocean resort . For a few years, beach clubs turned a profit, but most collapsed along with the stock market in 1929. By then there was a bridge to the rest of Long Island and a handful of year-round homes.
