Highlights
Beginnings: Rockaway Indians were Valley Stream's first residents, hunting in the forests alongside the area's several streams. Europeans first used the land for farming, dating to the late 1700s, and several small communities sprang up. There was Hungry Harbor, a settlement of squatters named for the status of its residents, along with Fosters Meadow toward the north and Tigertown to the northeast. The name Valley Stream dates to 1843, when Scottish immigrant Robert Pagan lobbied for a post office. The area remained rural for decades. The planked Merrick Road offered the first easy transportation from the area in 1853.
