Beginnings: Westbury sits on a small portion of the Hempstead Plains. Indians did not live there, but they traveled through on paths approximately where Old Country Road and Jericho Turnpike are now. English Quakers Edmond Titus and, a few years later, Henry Willis were the first to live in Westbury, using it for farming in the 1650s. Willis named it Westbury for a town in his home county of Wiltshire. Westbury soon became a center of Quaker life. Meetings of the Religious Society of Friends there in 1671 were among the first in America. Westbury Quakers also were among the first New Yorkers to free black slaves, doing so for reasons of conscience in 1776.
