Highlights
Beginnings: In 1671, the town fathers in Brookhaven declared that "there shall be a settlement of eight families or eight men at the Wading River.'' Joined by others from Southold in the next few years, the early settlers attempted to rename the community Westholde, but it never stuck. Wading River was likely the closest English equivalent to the Indian word Pauquaconsuk or "the river where we wade for thick, round-shelled clams.'' It evolved into a commercial center for nearby North Shore hamlets in the 1700s.
