The seat of Suffolk County government since the colonial assembly decreed it in 1727 didn't become a township for another 65 years. Riverhead's "downtown'' was nothing to write home about in 1804 when Timothy Dwight, visiting president of Yale College, described it succinctly and unsympathetically in his diary: "The courthouse, a poor decayed building, and a miserable hamlet containing about ten or twelve houses stand near the efflux of this river.''
