Bone Cancer
DILI, EAST TIMOR- APRIL 20: Family members of Olinda Mendes, 19, mourn her death as her body arrives from the hospital April 20, 2012 in Dili, East Timor. Olinda died of advanced stages of bone cancer, and due to limited medical health care in East Timor, there was no way to get Olinda to get proper advanced medical treatment to treat her. She lived her remaining days at the Bairo Pite Clinic (BPC) where she received free medical care. The clinic serves as a full service acute care clinic. East Timor is plagued by many health issues where diseases like resistant and non-resistant forms of malaria, variants of dengue fever and tuberculosis are common. East Timor is one of the world's poorest nations and life expectancy is 62 years, with forty five per cent of children in Timor underweight for their age. Overall, 41 per cent of East Timorese live below the national poverty line. Despite significant improvements, health status in Timor-Leste is poor. Low rates of use of public health services present a major challenge to improving the health of the people of the country.
