Adventures in the western CatskillsConsider it Club Med . . . for dogs.
Long Island pooch owners and their four-legged companions are invited to partake in a "Canine Club Getaway" Sept. 10-13 at Acra Manor Resort in the Catskills. The long weekend includes three nights' lodging, all meals, plus obedience and agility lessons, "barks and crafts" and other entertainment for $775 a person, based on double occupancy.
WHAT TO EXPECT
The inaugural trip, organized by Long Islanders (and Canine Club Getaway founders) Janice Costa, David Kralstein and Carole Kralstein, gives dogs and their owners an unusual opportunity to vacation together.
Want to swim with your dog? No problem - the pool is open to all. Sleep with your pooch? Absolutely.
There will be nightly entertainment ranging from 'Yappy Hour' by the pool to dancing and karaoke. Animal trainers will lead various classes - swimming for dogs, canine nutrition, scent detection. Organizers say pets will be free to play water games, Frisbee or go on guided hikes with their owners. A veterinarian will be on site, just in case.
Owners are asked to bring all their dog's normal gear - food, bowls, leashes, beds and crates - and waste disposal bags for cleaning up after their animals.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
But it's not all about the dogs. Nightly four-course dinners will be prepared, organizers say, by a former chef of the Russian Tea Room in Manhattan. Breakfast will be served buffet-style each morning.
Near the resort, guests can partake in pastimes ranging from golf ($18 for 18 holes) to antiquing in the Catskills region.
