Lincoln Castle was built in 1068 at the orders of William the Conquerer, two years after the Battle of Hastings.  It lay on a site that had been occupied since Roman times.  For the next 900 years the castle served as a court and prison, and its ramparts as a place for executions.<br>

Many of the original features remain.  The walks along its walls offer wide views of the cathedral, the city of Lincoln and the surrounding countryside.
