The author of “The Sound and the Fury” bought the house in the 1930s and did many of the renovations himself. Tour the home and its rooms — including the study where the outline of Faulkner’s novel “A Fable” is penciled in graphite and red on the plaster wall — and the grounds, including the Bailey’s Woods National Recreation Trail.

4. THE ERNEST HEMINGWAY HOUSE AND MUSEUM, KEY WEST, FLORIDA

The sun also rises on this shrine to the writer of “A Farewell to Arms” and more classics. Arrange for a guided tour of Papa Hemingway’s house, which includes the original furnishings (yes, he had a pink sofa in the living room) and the lush gardens where exotic plants from hibiscus to Rangoon creepers grow.
