Lakes (more than 3,000 of them), mountains (more than 100 over 3,000 feet) and unbroken forest (often as far as the eye can see) combine to create the splendor that is New York's Adirondacks.

Chazy Lake near Dannemora, N.Y., in the northern Adirondack Mountains is surrounded by a blaze of orange and red foliage.
