Long Island opticians offer interactive online shopping experience
Jodie Feist was a fifth-grader in the Sachem school district when she got the news: She needed glasses.
“At 11 years old, this was a death sentence,” said Jodie, who is known as Jo. “Glasses were ugly, and in them, in my mind, so was I.”
By age 13, Feist was in contact lenses, but when she started working at Plainview Opticians after college, her viewpoint changed.
"I started to feel pretty in my glasses,” she said. “I decided I loved glasses and wanted other people to have the same experience."
She went on to become an optician and take over Plainview Opticians, growing the staff, updating equipment, adding insurance plans and moving to a new location.
Now Feist and her business partner, another licensed optician and Long Islander who's also called Jo, have launched JoJoEyeWear.com to offer fashionable eyewear to a wider market.
The site offers frames in different styles and colors with a variety of lenses. It also lets shoppers "try on" pairs by selecting models with similar face shapes and features. Non-polarized and polarized prescription sunglasses are offered, too, and all orders are processed by the Jos themselves.
Customers can browse JoJo Eyewear's stock in person at their showroom at 436 Woodbury Rd. in Plainview.
