For 75 years, Stowe has been the most evocative name in Eastern skiing, due, in equal portions, to Mount Mansfield itself with its classic ski runs, including the legendary Front Four, and the quintessentially charming village located six miles away. The dearth of on-mountain lodging (to be addressed with the completion of the 319-room Stowe Mountain Resort sometime next year) means it's a pain getting to and from the slopes (free shuttle bus), but the trade off comes in the depth and variety of lodging, dining and après ski options in the village and along Mountain Road. Stowe is still as close to a traditional European resort as it gets in the eastern United States, and after years of stagnant investment, the old grand lady is finally getting the face lift she deserves. Early/late season (until Dec. 14, after March 31), adult $54, child (ages 6-12) $43; prime season, adult $79,child $58 child; and peak season, adult $84 adult, child $60.

Lessons
Stowe for Starters (ages 13 and up) includes two 90-minute group lessons and lift ticket, $85 midweek, $100 weekend/holiday

Ski & Stay packages at the Inn at the Mountain for $489 per person (3 days) and $790 per person (5 days). Stowe Points Card ($75) allows you to purchase discount lift tickets ($57 adults, $49 youth, $53 senior) all season long

OTHER SNOW ACTIVITIES

None at the resort itself. The village of Stowe, however, offers cross country skiing, skating, snowmobiling, and dog sledding.

FOR THE KIDS

Full-day programs for kids ages 4-14 (includes lift ticket and lunch), $105 midweek, $125 weekend/holiday. Cubs Day care (ages 3 months-3 years), full day $88 weekdays, $102 weekends/holidays

ON-SITE LODGING

Until the Stowe Mountain Lodge is completed sometime next year, the only option is the 33-room Inn at the Mountain, a country-style inn located at the base of Tollhouse Double.
