So you're having trouble figuring out how to get your glam on this New Year's Eve. Our advice? Go for the gold. It's such an easy amp up and while festive enough for the supreme annual fete, it's effortless, looks good on virtually everyone and is available e-v-e-r-y-w-h-e-r-e, from metallic duds to cosmetics and accessories.
And there's more. "In people's minds, metaphysically and philosophically, gold is a symbol of great enlightenment," says color expert Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Institute. "It's taking yellow, which means optimism and hope, to another level, adding glimmer and radiance."
A hefty hit of gold too flashy for you? Makeup is a great way to incorporate it into your look, says senior makeup artist Neil Young of MAC, where gold-flecked products run from illuminating Lustre Drops to eye shadow.
"The thing about gold is that it looks expensive and sophisticated, especially around the eye," says Young. "And right in the middle of winter, it warms up the complexion and is a perfect companion to the red lip."
Adds Suze Yalof Schwartz, the makeover expert and author of the blog tallskinnyrich.com, "I feel like gold is the one thing that makes everything look rich." She urges, "Be bold with gold," and suggests wearing gold shoes ("the piece de resistance," she says), a big gold cuff and other standout gold pieces. "Gold is current, and it makes everything seem divine, fresh and modern. Nothing is chicer than working in gold with black or white."
