TRENTON - Violence has hit historic levels in Trenton and city leaders say they will foot the cost for extra police patrols and security cameras.
Mayor Tony Mack and Police Director Ralph Rivera laid out the new plan to make the changes in more than a dozen high crime areas.
Residents who attended the event shouted out requests to bring back specialized gang units known as "TAC units." Rivera says the city cant afford it without extra cash from the state.
"It is difficult to bring back any specialty units without taking away from the standard patrol functions and experiencing an increase in overtime," Rivera says.
Mack says the department will be able to add the extra patrols and cameras, even if the state doesn't come through on a request for millions of dollars to hire extra officers.
