TARRYTOWN - Nearly 50 union construction workers staged a rally in Tarrytown Wednesday during President Barack Obama's speech.
Obama's speech called on Congress to fund transportation projects nationwide, including the new Tappan Zee Bridge. The union workers say they're asking Obama to make sure minority workers get jobs on those transportation projects.
"We applaud the efforts by the president bringing in all this work on infrastructure," says union organizer Vincent Torres. "But by the same token, we want a fair amount of equitable employment opportunities granted to those that are here." Torres says large construction projects rarely employ minority workers except to put them on job call lists.
Other construction workers at the rally say they hope they can get their message across to ensure they also get jobs on infrastructure projects.
