A sketch of Amy Schumer
New York City comedian Amy Schumer has been all over Comedy Central the past few years, from appearances on “Celebrity Roasts” where she’s taken Charlie Sheen and Roseanne Barr down a notch, to episodes of “The Burn with Jeffrey Ross” and “The Jeselnik Offensive” and her own stand-up special, “Mostly Sex Stuff.”
Fans will be getting to see a lot more of the 31-year-old Chelsea comedian tonight as her new sketch show, “Inside Amy Schumer,” debuts, featuring a mixture of funny scenarios, stand-up and interviews.
amNewYork spoke with Schumer about the show.
What is the key to sketch comedy? I enjoy a lot of different styles of sketch, but my favorite type of comedic anything is when it’s played very real and watching people behave and it’s really grounded in reality even if it’s the most ridiculous scene.
Why do you choose to go blue so often? I don’t talk about sex on purpose, it’s just kind of what interests me. It just always has — and not that I have sex more than the average person. ... I think a lot of funny things happen with sex and with dating that maybe some people feel more apologetic and embarrassed than I do.
How has living in NYC prepared you as a stand-up comic? Things that people think people consider shocking or too honest, I just feel like it’s so natural for living here.... Also, being ready for people taking a swing at you. You know, it wouldn’t be that weird. We’re always bracing for that.
So, I hear you’re related to New York Sen. Chuck Schumer ... I’m kind of barely related to him. I don’t ever see him. I’ve probably seen him five times in my whole life. You are so disappointed by that. I should just start lying. He raised me. He found me in a basket.
‘Inside Amy Schumer’ premieres Tuesday night at 10:30 on Comedy Central.
