A Bronx man sliced his roommate with a machete then set himself aflame Sunday, but a fast-acting bystander noticed the fire and dragged the man outside his burning house, according to published reports.

Teddy John, 36, allegedly attacked his roommate, Hobart Barrow, 65, around 9 a.m., then doused himself with accelerant and lit himself ablaze.

The two-story house they lived in on Southern Boulevard caught fire, which Ken Banks saw as he drove by. He rushed in, grabbed John and dragged him out.

"I got scorched," Banks, 58, told the Daily News, which first reported the incident. "He was still in flames. His clothes were burnt completely off of him."

Banks added: "He had a machete ... He dropped it when I was pulling him down. I was shocked."

John was taken to Jacobi Medical Center and was in critical condition. Police said he was arrested and charged with second-degree assault. Barrow was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital and was in stable condition.
