Burglary up 2% in the week after Hurricane Sandy: NYPD

Burglaries the week after Hurricane Sandy were up about 2% compared to the same time last year, though most other crime remained flat, the NYPD said Wednesday.
Since Sandy hit the city on Oct. 29, 226 people have been arrested for storm-related offenses, the majority being burglaries, the department said.
Car-related theft and fraud has also been a problem since the storm, and the NYPD is a task force. The department said it has had reports of tow truck operators removing storm-damaged cars without owner permission, then extorting the owners for thousands of dollars when he or she tries to pick up the car.
The NYPD also said that 81 officers have suffered line-of-duty injuries since Sandy, and one off-duty officer was killed as a result of the hurricane. Some 1,300 other members of the service sustained catastrophic damages to property.
