New York is the unofficial culinary capital of the U.S., with six of the country's 10 best restaurants calling the Big Apple home, according to a new survey.

In the list of the nation's top 101 restaurants by TheDailyMeal.com, the Gramercy Tavern came in at No. 2, the highest position for a New York City spot.

Following were three more New York eateries: Le Bernadin at No. 3, Momofuku Ssam Bar at No. 4 and Eleven Madison Park at No. 4. The top spot in the country was The French Laundry in California.

New York, which had 26 restaurants on the list, "is still considered by most chefs the ultimate proving ground of their talents and their ability to run a restaurant," said Colman Andrews, editorial director of The Daily Meal.

Andrews added that Gramercy Tavern is as "good as it's ever been."

But it wasn't only the city's elite restaurants that claimed top honors: Burger joint Shake Shack came in at No. 11, before Per Se, Jean Georges and Daniel.

Though the top 20 spots are dominated by New York, the city had two fewer restaurants on the overall list than it did last year, down from 28 in 2012.

Ben Widdicombe, editor-in-chief of Gilt City and an amNewYork contributor, said the drop may be because of the jump in popularity of fine dining nationwide.

"In general, food culture across the country is experiencing a real upswing, and that means you're going to see a decentralization of power," Widdicombe said.

He added that "food trends are favoring local and farm-to-table production," both of which are easier to pull off in "places with less densely populated areas."

More than 150 food critics, writers and bloggers voted in the third annual survey. They considered the cuisine, region, atmosphere, level of "buzz" and price.
