How to enjoy Valentine's Day chocolate without the guilt
Registered dietitian Sharon Richter shared with amNewYork her tips on how to indulge, but not go overboard, this Valentine's Day.
1. Try individually wrapped chocolates. While there might be a bit more waste, you will be able to see exactly how much you've eaten, and be forced to experience it in a tangible, tactile way.
2. Choose chocolates made with "real ingredients." Candy with a lot of filler ingredients can get in the way of digestion. And it doesn't make you feel good. Richter recommends KIND healthy snacks and Sweet Loren's all-natural, ready-to-bake desserts.
3. Make smart candy choices. A chocolate covered strawberry has far fewer calories and fat than a truffle.
4. Instead of milk chocolate, opt for dark chocolate, which chemically boosts your serotonin levels, making you feel better.
5. Be a "mindful eater." If you know you're going to eat more chocolate than you should, or have a decadent dinner, choose a salad for lunch.
