How to make a ... Jill Scott

Musician/poet/actress Jill Scott keeps busy.

Her newest album, "The Light of the Sun," has been garnering rave reviews, and she's on tour with one of the most engaging lineups of the summer-tour season, bringing the Summer Block Party to Jones Beach with Anthony Hamilton, Mint Condition, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Doug E. Fresh.

Prior to that, Scott won an NAACP Award for her acting performance in "Sins of the Mother" on Lifetime, as well as accolades for her role on HBO's "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency."

But other than a full calendar and boundless energy, how does one go about making a Jill Scott?

Two shots of Minnie Riperton
Both Scott and Riperton have soul to spare, with no need for gimmicks or airs. In addition, Scott's range rivals that of Riperton, which (considering the high notes in a song such as "Lovin' You") is impressive.

One shot of ?uestlove of the Roots
Scott's first major exposure to the world was on "The Roots Come Alive," the band's live effort, on which she sang the part she wrote for "You Got Me" (eventually recorded by Erykah Badu). Oh, and the hair.

Two dashes of Henry Rollins
How about a poetry slam between Scott and the former Black Flag singer? Both have worked in spoken word, with Rollins releasing almost as many albums of prose as he has albums of music.

A twist of Dean Martin
The "King of Cool" oozed personality, and it bled over from his singing to his acting career. With her star turn in "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency," Scott has shown that even when playing someone else, she never loses her own essence.

Stir with Oprah Winfrey
Actress? Singer? Bra designer? The Scott empire is one magazine and cable network away from going head-to-head with the Big O.

If you go: Jill Scott is performing Thursday at 7 p.m. at Nikon at Jones Beach on Long Island. $39.75-$150.75
