Is NBC planning to replace Jay Leno with Jimmy Fallon? Depends on whom you ask.

The Hollywood Reporter says NBC has scheduled a May announcement of Leno’s retirement from his "Tonight Show" spot, with "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon expected to take over Leno’s spot beginning in fall 2014.

The potential move may be part of NBC’s drive for a younger audience, the report said, with Leno, 62, facing stiff competition from ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel, whose show draws a generally younger crowd.

“The more time Jimmy Kimmel is in that slot, the more the young audience goes that way, the harder it is for Jimmy [Fallon] to keep that audience,” a source told The Hollywood Reporter.

Still, NBC is denying early claims of such a replacement, and Leno’s reps declined to comment.
