Memorial Day weekend in New York: Here's what to do
amNewYork will not publish Friday or Monday because of the Memorial Day holiday. We will return on Tuesday.
The kickoff to summer may be a soggy one, as the city could be in for "significant rainfall" this Memorial Day weekend.
The storm that rocked the Midwest this week is on a direct course for New England, but the city may see some of the worst of it, according to AccuWeather.
But this is still Memorial Day weekend, so if the clouds clear up, these are a few of the many things you can do to celebrate the arrival of summer:
Visit Coney Island: Coney is almost completely back up and running after Superstorm Sandy, with Grimaldi's, Nathan's, parts of the New York Aquarium, Luna Park and more open or expected to be open by this weekend. Special events will be running through Monday. Check out coneyisland.com for details and schedules.
Stop by the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum: The museum will be offering special tours, hands-on activities and live performances all weekend, plus a free screening of "Top Gun" on the flight deck Friday. The festivities wrap Tuesday with a ceremony to unfurl a 100-foot American flag. For details, visit intrepidmuseum.org.
Head to Governors Island: The island officially opens on Saturday with a massive festival, including arts and crafts, musical performances, theater shows, clowns, puppet-making workshops and more. Perfect for a family outing. Open from noon to 4 p.m. Visit governorsislandalliance.org for all the details.
Shop: If the weather doesn't clear, spend your weekend indoors and enjoy any of the many sales going on. The Gap, Coldwater Creek, Banana Republic, Woodbury Common Premium Outlets and more will have huge discounts, so keep a sharp eye out.
