New Year's Eve in Times Square: Everything you need to know
This New Year's Eve, New York is going "Gangnam Style."
South Korean pop sensation Psy is set to bring his infectious dance craze to Times Square on New Year's Eve, joining Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen and more to ring in 2013.
This year's celebration is hosted by Allison Hagendorf and will kick off at 6 p.m. with the opening ceremonies that feature a Chinese cultural performance from the Sino-American Friendship Association.
"We expect this year to be a full house, especially with all the talent we've gathered," said Sam Breidbart, a spokesman for Times Square Alliance.
This year's ball is 12 feet in diameter and weighs nearly 12,000 pounds. It is covered with 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles, and is illuminated by more than 32,000 LED lights. It will feature a Let There Be Peace design, which includes 288 triangles with a dove with its wings spread, 288 with people holding hands, and 288 with hearts, among other symbols.
The evening will also have a tribute to inimitable TV personality Dick Clark, who died this year. Clark hosted the New Year's Eve celebrations for more than 30 years until his stroke in 2004.
If you're planning to head to Times Square, get there early and bundle up. At least one million revelers are expected to crowd into the area, with the diehards arriving early in the morning to pick out the bets spots.
Temps this year are expected to dip lower than normal, and AccuWeather predicts it will feel about 30 degrees colder outside than last year's New Year's Eve. Still, that's much warmer than the record low, which was 1 degree in 1917.
If you're planning to stay at home, you can still get the full Times Square experience. For the fourth year, you can catch a livestream of the entire celebration from your laptop, and this year you can also watch the whole thing from your iPhone or Android phone through the official Times Square Ball App. Experts at Tumblr will also live-GIF the best moments of the night.
