They say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but after discovering this unique and unexpected collection made from vintage buttons, we have to disagree.

From bib necklaces to cuffs to belts to headbands (many of which have interchangeable functions), Chel. C’s pieces are the brainchild of designer Michelle Charak, 25, who started her Garment District-based line about a year ago.

“Every button that goes into the necklaces speaks to me in some way,” Charak said. “I combine different buttons using either color families or similar details as a basis for determining how each piece flows together.”

Charak mostly finds the buttons at factories whose owners let her “raid their old dead stock.”
She also scours eBay and vintage stores, and works with vendors in the Garmet District, to find the most unique materials from which to create her wearable pieces of art.

Chel. C’s jewelry ranges from $95-$760 and can be bought at chelcnyc.com.
