City Council Speaker Christine Quinn says the city needs to do a better job of keeping the Big Apple's displaced families from freezing this winter.

Quinn, a potential mayoral candidate, sent a letter to the Department of Homeless Services Sunday urging them to ensure families who apply for shelter aren't rejected during extreme cold weather.

Single homeless applicants are ensured beds when temperatures are frigid, according to Quinn.

"It is unacceptable to deny families shelter when dangerous weather conditions exist, particularly for young children," she said in a statement.

The department said it provides as much shelter as it can within its resources to all applicants.
