Work will resume on Monday at the Second Avenue subway construction site where an explosion of rubble smashed nearby buildings this week, MTA chief Joe Lhota said Thursday.

Lhota said underground work at what will be a new station at 72nd Street is expected to resume on Monday, though no explosives will be used on the site until he is "satisfied that it is safe to blast." He did not give an estimate as to when that could be.

Lhota added that he still has confidence in the agency's subcontractors for the megaproject, despite officials' assertions on Wednesday that worker errors caused the explosion, which did not injure workers or pedestrians.
