Gary Filippone was nearby and says he ran over to help. "We went around the back but the sliding door was locked, we went to the side but the smoke was too much," he says.

Neighbor Dave Grasso says he consoled his friend who escaped the fire but could not get to his girlfriend.

"He said she was on the couch and tried but couldn't get to her the smoke was so thick," says Grasso.

Firefighters are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim. No other injuries were reported.
