Yonkers police on Tuesday released a sketch of a man who shot and wounded a pregnant woman during a robbery attempt in February and are asking the public for help in finding him.

The crime happened about 8:40 p.m. Feb. 28 at an apartment building at 541 Bronx River Rd., police said. A 23-year-old woman who lived at the building and was nine months pregnant walked into the lobby and was approached by a man who tried to rob her, police said.

The man fired a single shot from a silver .380 semiautomatic handgun into the woman's upper stomach area, police said, then fled toward Edgewood Avenue. The victim was brought to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx, where she underwent surgery, and delivered the child via emergency C-section. She and her child survived and the baby was born healthy, police said.

Police examined surveillance video from the lobby after the shooting.

The man is described as about 25-30 years old, about 5-foot-6 or 5-foot-7, with a medium build and gaps between his teeth. He was wearing a skin-tone bandage below the right eye and a black hooded sweatshirt and dark pants at the time of the robbery attempt, police said.

Yonkers detectives are investigating the incident as an attempted murder, police said. Police are asking residents to forward the sketch to other city residents and are asking anyone with information on the case to call city police detectives at 914-377-7724. All calls will be kept confidential.
