Firefighter Jef Campion, 51, died Friday night of what has now been confirmed as a suicide, according to authorities.

Fire officials say he was found by his girlfriend unresponsive in his home.

Campion had been a firefighter for nearly three decades. He was well-known for his commitment to charity work, especially to the Ronald McDonald House. He was also a Sept. 11 first responder and he spent a month at Ground Zero.

Firefighter union leaders say Campion was on medical leave for the past six months.

"He was one of the greatest guys you'll ever meet in your life," said Barry McGoey, of the Yonkers Firefighters Union.
