A 67-year old man died in the Atlantic Ocean off Long Beach on Sunday morning after falling into the water while fishing, authorities said.

Long Beach police detectives said Dihou Liu, of Elmhurst, Queens, walked out on the jetties near Monroe Boulevard before falling into the ocean and drowning, according to a news release.

Authorities pulled Liu from the water and took lifesaving measures, police said, before the victim was transported to a hospital and pronounced dead.

“The jetties are not safe to walk on at any time,” Long Beach acting Police Commissioner Richard DePalma said in the release. “They are very dangerous due to the slippery surfaces and are surrounded by waters with strong currents.”
