THE SCOOP Woodmere, a hamlet in the Five Towns, is a predominantly residential community with easy access to New York City, says Town of Hempstead Councilman Anthony D’Esposito. “It’s a close-knit neighborhood with a lot of open space and walkable areas,” he says.

A well-visited spot is Woodmere Dock, with views of the bay and surrounding marshlands, where residents can fish, birdwatch and launch boats from the ramp.

Real estate agent Ronnie Gerber of Douglas Elliman Real Estate notes that Woodmere is near Kennedy Airport and is a 15-minute drive to ocean beaches.

“People have been gravitating to the suburban lifestyle much more since the pandemic, enjoying their backyards and the several parks nearby,” Gerber says. Nearby, in North Woodmere, are Grant and North Woodmere parks, with playgrounds, athletic fields, basketball and tennis courts, ice skating, pools and a golf course.

The range of home styles in Woodmere includes mostly Colonials, split-levels, and ranches, with prices starting at about $600,000 for smaller homes and reaching into the millions for larger, newly renovated homes on larger parcels. Co-op apartment buildings and some condos can be found around the hamlet as well.

In response to a proposed 280-home development on the 118-acre Woodmere Golf Club, the Town of Hempstead established a two-year building moratorium, resulting in ongoing litigation with the club.

Most of the shops, restaurants, professional offices are on and around Broadway, notes David Friedman, president of the Hewlett-Woodmere Business Association.

“In Woodmere, there’s nothing like a Target or any kind of big box. It’s mostly independent businesses,” says Friedman.
