A Hauppauge man not only drove the wrong way on Veterans Memorial Highway in Smithtown in the early hours of Wednesday morning, he then stopped to steal two cases of beer, Suffolk police said.

Lance Broussand, 37, had driven his 2020 Hyundai Elantra east in the westbound lanes of the highway. He then stopped at a gas station near the Smithtown Bypass, where he stole two cases of beer at about 2:30 a.m. — before he was arrested in the parking lot, the police said.

Broussand was charged with petit larceny and driving while intoxicated.

The name of Broussand's defense counsel will be released at his arraignment, which is set for Wednesday.
