Long Island weather: Hot with a high risk of rip currents

A combination of hot temperatures, humidity, and possible showers and thunderstorms are in Long Island’s forecast this week, according to the National Weather Service.

A heat advisory remains in effect for the area through Monday until Tuesday evening. Monday’s high will be near 90, but heat index values will make it feel as high as 101. A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. and a southwest wind between 9 and 15 mph are forecast, the weather service said.

Monday night into Tuesday morning is expected to be partly cloudy with a 20% chance of rain and thunderstorms before 2 a.m. The low temperature is expected to be in the mid-70s and a southwest wind should blow at between 10 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

A high risk of rip currents for Long Island beaches remains through Tuesday.

“There’s a large area of high pressure offshore which has been funneling up this warm, moist, kind of tropical-in-nature air mass over the region the past couple of days and that will stay in place for the start of the workweek,” said Faye Morrone, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Upton. “Until it’s displaced by a cold front that will bring that chance of showers and storms in Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday.”

The weather service recommends staying indoors with air conditioning and avoiding outdoor activities during the afternoon when temperatures are highest, Morrone said. Staying hydrated also is important, she added.

Hot temperatures and showers trickle into a sunny Tuesday as a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms are forecast after 2 p.m. Tuesday’s high will be near 91, but heat index values will make it feel just shy of 100. At night, a chance of showers and thunderstorms continues with a low near 73.

The temperature will drop on Wednesday, but a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms remains, according to the weather service. Partly sunny skies with a high near 84 are the forecast. Showers are likely Wednesday night, mainly before 2 a.m., as the low remains near 70 with mostly cloudy skies.

A mostly cloudy Thursday will bring a 40% chance of showers before 2 p.m. with a high near 83 degrees. The temperature will drop at night to a low of around 68.

A sunny day is forecast for Friday as temperatures will be in the low 80s. Nighttime will be mostly clear with a low around 65.

Saturday also stays dry and sunny with a high near 81, the weather service said. Saturday evening should be mostly clear with a low in the mid-60s.

Sunday should follow the same trend with mostly sunny skies and a high near 84.
