A brief taste of sunny warm temperatures was expected to give way to a deluge of rain to soak the weekend heading into Mother's Day, according to the National Weather Service.

After highs reached the 70s Thursday on parts of Long Island, temperatures were expected to only reach the low 60s Friday with rain expected before 2 p.m. Rain was expected to increase into Friday night, totaling up to an inch through Friday evening, forecasters said.

The storm system will be approaching from the west. Sea breezes along the coast are also expected in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Then, the weather service said, an extended period of rain is forecast from Friday through Saturday.

"The chance for rain will increase from west to east starting around daybreak Friday ... with much of the area seeing rain by Friday afternoon, which will continue through Saturday," the weather service said.

Moderate to briefly heavy rain is possible Friday night, the weather service said.

Saturday will also be breezy, with winds of 15 mph to 25 mph and gusts of around 30 mph to 35 mph expected, the weather service said. Another three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible Saturday.

Highs in the low 50s are forecast.

There is about a 50% chance of rain early Sunday, but Mother's Day should otherwise be cloudy and breezy, with highs in the mid-50s, the weather service said.

Monday is also expected to be breezy, with sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s.

The sunshine should continue Tuesday, with highs near 60 degrees. There is a chance of rain that night, the weather service said.

Rain is also possible Wednesday, which should be warmer, with highs in the mid-60s forecast.
