EAST ORANGE - State police say three people were killed in a multivehicle crash on Interstate 280 in East Orange.

Authorities say a Mack dump truck driven by Michael Devito, 65, of North Bergen, was traveling eastbound near mile marker 11.7 when it lost control. A Honda and five other vehicles were struck just after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Lt. Col. Edward Cetnar says the Honda was immediately engulfed in flames shortly after impact, and the occupants, a driver and two passengers, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Video from Chopper 12 shows several vehicles badly damaged from the crash. One vehicle was draped in a white sheet.

Cetnar says four other people were injured in the crash. Devito, a woman and two children were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries.

Just after noon, state police say the driver of a Dodge Ram was killed when the vehicle rear-ended a tractor-trailer in the westbound lanes of Interstate 280 near mile marker 12.4 in Newark.

Authorities are looking into the possibility that the second accident was a result of rubbernecking. Cetnar says traffic on the westbound side was slowed at the time.

Another fatal accident was reported on I-80 in Parsippany, after a man on a motorcycle was killed when he slammed into a box truck at around 11:40 a.m.

"Very unusual for us to have three fatal accidents in northern New Jersey, all  within minutes of each other, and one more horrific than the next," Cetnar says.

The names of the deceased have not been released. All three accidents remain under investigation.
