Visitors view the newly opened New York Remembers 9/11 memorial exhibit at the Wang Center on the Stony Brook University campus. The exhibit was officially opened Thursday and includes a wall of photographs and several artifacts from Ground Zero. The large American flag was draped over the FDNY Engine Company 6, as it was removed from the Ground Zero site after being crushed. Six firefighters from the downtown firehouse lost their lives that day. For nearly a year, the flag hung outside the firehouse in honor of those firefighters. (Sept. 8, 2011)

Retired New York City Police Officer Steve Smaldon, who served with a canine unit, admires the newly erected statue honoring all dogs that helped with search and recovery efforts at Ground Zero.
