Abandoned car sparks suicide concern on Tappan Zee Bridge

TARRYTOWN - An abandoned car on the Tappan Zee Bridge sparked suicide concerns overnight.

Police say a Honda Accord was discovered unattended around 4:30 a.m. today and standard safety protocol was put into effect. Often drivers run out of gas or break down and walk to find assistance. No notes from the driver were left, however the keys were with the vehicle and a driver's license was found on the front seat.

When the driver wasn't found on or near the bridge, marine units were sent out to search the Hudson River. Boats were launched from Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow, Irvington, Piermont and by the Westchester County Marine Unit.

Police say the missing person is not the registered owner of the car. The owner of the car is a family member of the missing person.

There were no cameras angled at the middle of the bridge and there have been no witnesses who saw anyone jump.

Police say they will continue to treat the matter as a missing persons case until proven otherwise. They have not yet released the name of the missing person.
