It’s still winter, but ArToro Restaurant & Tequila Bar is warming up downtown Northport with Caribbean cuisine and cocktails.
The new, moderately priced spot takes over the Main Street address occupied by 7T8 European Fusion and, before that, Ship’s Inn.
Restaurateur Artie Berke, who also operates Nina’s, an Italian eatery on Main Street, said “Tequila is hot.” He offers eight tequila cocktails as well as tequila by the shot. His El Trunfo cocktail is a mojito-Margarita blend.
Berke said he chose to specialize in Caribbean fare in honor of his late mother, who was Puerto Rican. His kitchen prepares mofongo, the classic Puerto Rican dish with mashed plantains and chicken or shrimp.
Paella also is a mainstay, along with Cuban specialties and vegetarian dishes. The desserts include a chocolate shell filled with mango mousse and a “lava” cake with fresh raspberries.
ArToro is open Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, 5 p.m. to midnight, and Friday and Saturday, 5 p.m. to 3 a.m.
