Olympic eats: Korean dining on Long Island

The 2018 Olympic Winter Games start this week in Pyeonchang. Bring an appetite.

Korean cuisine, though not widespread in Nassau and Suffolk, is sparked with spice, full of meat dishes and rice. It’s zesty fare, as lively as Alpine skiing and speed skating, can often be as bold as ski jumping and luge.

Here are three restaurants where you’ll find the flavors of Korean cooking, one that’s spurred by red pepper and green onion, garlic and ginger, vinegar and sesame.

Ssambap Korean BBQ in Stony Brook will get you going with barbecued short rib, beef brisket, prime rib-eye, pork rib, pork belly, seafood and vegetables, most available either marinated or not; bulgogi, thinly sliced prime rib marinated in soy sauce; and unmarinated prime short rib. There’s plenty of bibimbap, a rice dish typically served with vegetables or meat; and the namesake ssambap, DIY lettuce wraps filled with meat, rice or both. Surasang in Syosset is a casual spot where you’ll enjoy kimchi pancakes; beef and pork dumplings, either boiled or fried; beef short rib barbecue; spicy cod soup; shredded beef in spicy beef broth with scallions and mushrooms; and bibimbap.
